The Light at the End of the Tunnel
2:55 AMHave you ever been in a tunnel and find yourself feeling excited for a new journey? Perhaps this tunnel will take you to places in which you will soar, that feeling of the wind bustling through your hair as you open your windows, the lights in the tunnel make the drive comforting.
Then, after a few hours, you realise that the lights start to dim, and you've been driving for a bit longer than expected, you lower down the volume of the music you are listening to, as you skew your focus towards what ahead of you, your mind starts to linger, oh no, what if this leads you to nowhere?
You start to panic, you start regretting, you start blaming, first towards others, towards how screwed up this situation is, when in fact, the hardest pill to swallow is, you were blaming yourself all these while.
And because you were too invested in your self pity, you overlook the present. The people in the car with you, who have done nothing but support you, yet you spent your time being angry, while in fact, you weren't even on the driver's seat, the driver has to be your crutch as you tire yourself over your denial. You blame the passengers, you blame the dimming lights, you blame the music, yet you refuse to deny the fact that you were indeed sad. Yet you waste your time crying in the passenger seat instead of trying to find a way out of this tunnel. So you asked for the car to be stopped.
But perhaps one day, one of the dimming lights in this dark tunnel of no return suddenly starts twinkling. Perhaps you realise, like the light, your heart may dim, but you should hold on to that last twinkling spirit of yours. You realised, maybe, it's time to slowly start the car and continue this journey in the tunnel. So you wake your fellow comrades, and say to them, "Let's go. But this time, let me drive."
You don't expect anything from this drive moving forward. You slowly sang to the songs in the radio with your comrades. You checked your phone, and found a signal, "yes, perhaps we are at the end of the tunnel!", even though all you see in front of you is the darkness ahead.
Alas, your phone dies. The dimming lights have all turned dead. There's nothing left to see ahead. You stop the car. All you wanted to do since the start of this tumultuous journey was to scream. So you screamed to the void, you screamed til there's nothing left from your lungs. Perhaps there really was no light at the end of the tunnel.
As you scream, a hand touched your shoulder. You turn back to see your fellow comrades as they holler you to get into the car. Perhaps in this darkness, the light did not come from the tunnel, but from those around you after all. As you breath in, you stepped your foot onto the accelerator, switched the gear break and drove. You were weak, but you know all too well that life has to go on regardless. You'd rather live a life driving to the end than getting stuck in the abyss. With the help of the lights around you, you search for that glimmer of hope for the light at the end of the tunnel.
With no music on, you and your comrades start singing off-tune, and one of you shout, "did you see that?!", and pointed to the front.
There it is, the light at the end of the tunnel!
As you breathe out, you see the sun that shines before you, greeting you and your comrades after a long journey. You told yourself, "you did it", and as you look pass your comrades, they, too, are smiling as they see their light at the end of the tunnel.
I am now free.
